Kodiak Brown Bear are the world's largest carnivore due to the almost unlimited volume of salmon to feed on and have long had the respect of seasoned international hunters. There are high volumes of large Kodiak Brown Bear throughout Afognak Island's lush habitat. "Fair Chase" is the hunting-style throughout Alaska so hunters need to be in good shape for a confident advantage. We do use warm comfortable cabin-cruisers to spot a large portion of the wildlife so those hunters who aren't as rugged as they once were also do very well on our hunts. This adds to the adventure as much more wildlife (including assorted marine-mammals) is seen, compared to sitting/glassing/hiking on a grassy hillside much of a day.

Hunting for Alaska Brown Bear and Alaska Grizzly Bears is said to be long hours of glassing and minutes of sheer adrenaline and excitement. Our Black Bear hunts begin in the Homer Small Boat Harbor. You can load your gear the night before your hunt and stay on the boat if you would like or show up early the day of departure. We depart for the hunting grounds in the morning and may travel anywhere from 2-8 hours that day, depending on weather and time of season. We are able to start hunting within about 2 hours out and continue to glass for bears the rest of the day. Brown Bear hunting requires a lot of "glassing" and much of this can be done from the boat. This is a major advantage as it also keeps your scent away and allows you to often get ahead of the bear with the use of our skiff. You may also want to hike up a nearby hillside and glass from there. We often see bears right on the beach but hiking for your trophy is not uncommon

The vast territory of the Yukon has 20 hunting concessions. Our hunting area is 8,000 sq. miles. The hunting opportunities are endless. Hunters fly into Whitehorse and are then flown to a remote base camp and then travel by horseback to remote tent camps. Hunt area is located in the Big Salmon Mountains and the Nisutlin Plateau. Hunters and guides will use, atv, horses and jet boats to access your hunting location. We offer some fantastic hunting for Brown & Grizzly bears. Most of our hunts take place in our “Sole Use” (I’m the only guide that can legally operate here) guide concession in Denali Preserve, near Mt. McKinley. My concession is current through 2017, and has been expanded to 600 plus square miles, and to include some prime fish streams and denning areas that have been off limits to guided non resident hunters since 1988!!!.

We hunt different areas and use different methods depending on the hunt desired. The two methods are boat hunts which are spot and stalk only or fly out hunts where we spot and stalk as well as bait. In the early spring we hunt the coastal areas from a 33 foot offshore boat and glass for bears and then take a skiff in for a stalk. These hunts are typically done in late April, May and the first part of June. You will be staying at the outfitters home or in a cabin during this hunt. You can do just the hunt or do a hunting/fishing combo. We fish for halibut and salmon at this time of year and it adds a little variety to the hunting trip.

Grizzly Bears are abundant in the Talkeetna Mountains of interior Alaska. Glassing valleys rich with blueberries and migratory routes is a sure fire way to encounter these nomadic bears. Brown and Black Bear hunting is identical even though it takes place in completely different areas. You will be hunting the Famous ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chicagof) for huge Brown Bears, and the protein-rich islands and coastal mainland for monster Island Black Bear. Since the 1940s Kodiak Island has had the mystique of the Big Coastal Brown Bears to the point where they are simply called “Kodiaks”. Every year we conduct 3 spring and 2 fall Kodiak Island Brown Bear hunts. All of our hunts are conducted in the same manner, spot and stalk. This is why good optics are very important. Rain or shine we will go the distance with you in your search of that Kodiak Island Brown Bear of a lifetime. The terrain on the South end of Kodiak Island is fairly open with no evergreens and few deciduous trees. Large grassy openings sprinkled with willow and alder brush allow game to be spotted easily from a great distance. We own beautiful, beach-front, land with three permanent, wood heated cabins within our area of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which we base our hunts out of and in most cases you return to every night. Meals are served family style and prepared by a competent cook, often with the addition of fresh seafood.

​Brown and Grizzly bears are classified as the same species even though there are notable differences between them. Kodiak Brown Bears are classified as a distinct subspecies from those on the mainland because they have been isolated from the other bears since the last ice age. Kodiak bears have almost an unlimited amount of Salmon to feed on. This not only makes these bears huge but gives Kodiak one of the highest concentration of Brown Bears in the World.

The Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos) is the smaller inland cousin of the Brown Bear. The Grizzly’s in my area are mountain dwellers in the true sense. Most bears that we take are in the 6 ½ to 7 ½ foot range. Due to the lack of protein and very short growing season, these Grizzly Bears are not able to reach the massive size of the bears in southern parts of the state. These bears depend mainly on berries, roots, ground squirrels and the occasional dead caribou for food. They are plentiful yet can be challenging to hunt. Like the Brown Bear, they have an amazing sense of smell and surprisingly acute eye sight. An Arctic Grizzly is a truly beautiful animal that you will have to see to fully appreciate.

There are plenty of Grizzlies in our part of the Wrangells. They live and den here. They can be seen everywhere from the Chitina River all the way up with the Dall Sheep and Mountain Goats. Our hunters take about half of them out free roaming the others come from moose kills. The sizes range from 7’ up to an 8’10” whopper. The boars have been around the high sevens to low eights. Sow are smaller. We discourage the taking of sows for obvious reasons. The grizzlies in Alaska have many color phases, these bears are very dark and resemble brown bears with the large prominent snouts.

Kodiak brown bear hunts take place in both the spring and fall and are conducted on Kodiak and Afognak Islands. Our hunting grounds are directly between the winter dens and summer feeding grounds for the bears, making for prime hunting in either season.

Kodiak Brown Bears speak for themselves. World renowned and extensively studied and managed, the Kodiak bear population is at an all time high. The annual sport harvest for the Island is approximately 200 bears, 75% of these being boars. Approximately 40% of the boars harvested have skulls measuring over 26 ½ inches with 20 % of these record book size, 28”, showing the health of the population.

The Kodiak Brown Bear is the largest land based meat eater in the world. These magnificent animals grow so big because of the abundance of salmon that return to the Archipelago year after year; there is a tremendous amount of easily accessible food. Alaska Coastal Bear hunting is done in unit 9E on the Alaska Peninsula 85 miles below King Salmon. This is in the heart of bear country which begins around Lake Illiamna and ends at Cold Bay. 400 miles of bear country...I am in the center of it. We have the biggest bears in the world here along with Kodiak Island, about 150 miles away. We hunt bears from 8 to 10½ feet with 80-90% success over the years, and had 100% one spring season.

Our vessel based Coastal Black Bear Hunt is by far our most popular for many reasons. First, our guide area boasts the highest concentration of black bears on earth. Hunters see an average of 30 to 60 black bears on a six day hunt. These bears are large as well as plentiful. Our average is between six feet eight inches to over seven feet.
